Productboard's 250 AI credits: the math nobody does before buying
Productboard's Spark AI is priced in credits, and the numbers on the pricing page are worth reading twice. On the Plus plan, each maker gets 250 credits a month. Productboard's own usage examples: analyzing 100 pieces of customer feedback costs around 30–50 credits, and generating a comprehensive specification can cost 50–200.
Run that math. One serious PRD can consume up to 80% of your month. A feedback-analysis pass plus one document, and a maker on Plus may be done by the 10th. After that, Spark's AI features switch off until the monthly reset — or until you buy top-ups at $5 per 50 credits.
The tiers don't change the shape
Free workspaces share 50 credits across every maker. Business raises the allowance to 500 per maker, Enterprise to 800 (plus a base pool). The allowances grow, but the structure is the same on every tier: the AI you were sold is a balance that depletes, and the heaviest use — the deep analysis and document generation that actually justify an "AI product management" tool — costs the most per click.
To Productboard's credit, nothing gets locked or deleted when you run out; your workspace and data stay accessible. What stops is the AI. Which is a strange failure mode when the AI is the reason the plan costs what it costs.
The hesitation tax
We've written before about what metered AI does to teams: every "is this worth a credit?" is a small hesitation applied to exactly the work the tool was bought to accelerate. Credit systems with usage examples like "a spec might cost 200" make the hesitation rational. You start saving your credits for something important, which means you stop using the AI casually, which means it never becomes part of how the team actually works.
The architectural difference
AIOProductOS includes AI un-metered from the entry plan up, on flat per-team pricing. That isn't bravado; it's a different architecture. Most of what product teams ask — what's the revenue behind this request, which paying customers are blocked, did the last release move retention — computes deterministically over one joined record per customer. No model call, no credit, no hallucination. The model is reserved for genuinely generative work, which is a small enough slice to include flat.
